What is Cataract Surgery – How It Works
Understanding Cataracts

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery removes the eye's natural clouded lens and replaces it with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It is the most performed surgery in the world — safe, fast, and life-changing.

A cataract occurs when the eye's natural lens becomes progressively cloudy, causing blurred vision, faded colours, glare sensitivity, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts develop naturally with age — by age 65, over 50% of people have some degree of cataract formation.

Modern cataract surgery uses a technique called phacoemulsification. Through a tiny 2.2mm micro-incision, ultrasound energy breaks the clouded lens into microscopic fragments that are gently suctioned out. A foldable artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is then inserted through the same incision, where it unfolds and positions itself permanently.

The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes per eye, is performed under local anaesthetic (numbing drops), and requires no stitches — the micro-incision self-seals naturally. Most patients notice dramatically improved vision within 24 hours.

With today's premium IOL options, cataract surgery in Turkey is no longer just about removing the cataract — it's an opportunity to correct your vision entirely, potentially eliminating your need for glasses for distance, reading, and everything in between.

Cataract Surgery Turkey FAQ – Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions

Cataract Surgery FAQ

Everything you need to know about cataract surgery in Turkey — from procedure details and IOL lens options to cost, recovery, and travel logistics.

All Questions Procedure IOL Lenses Cost Recovery Travel
1What is the cost of cataract surgery in Turkey?
Cataract surgery in Turkey costs from €1,800 per eye for a monofocal IOL, €2,400 for multifocal, and €2,900 for a premium trifocal IOL. All packages are fully inclusive — covering the IOL lens, surgery, pre-op diagnostics, 2-night hotel, VIP airport transfers, medications, and lifetime aftercare. This represents savings of 50–65% compared to equivalent private treatment in the UK (£3,500–£5,500/eye) and USA ($4,500–$6,800/eye). You can compare all eye surgery packages on our homepage.
2Is cataract surgery in Turkey safe?
Absolutely. Cataract surgery is the most performed surgery in the world — over 30 million procedures annually — with a 98%+ success rate globally. Our Istanbul clinic is JCI-accredited (the gold standard for international healthcare quality), and our lead ophthalmologist has performed over 15,000 phacoemulsification procedures with a 99.2% complication-free rate. We use only FDA/CE-approved premium IOL brands from Alcon, Zeiss, and Johnson & Johnson.
3Is cataract surgery painful?
No. The procedure is performed under topical anaesthetic (numbing eye drops) — no injections, no general anaesthesia. You're awake and comfortable throughout the 15-minute procedure at our Istanbul clinic. Most patients describe feeling only slight pressure. Mild discomfort and light sensitivity for 24–48 hours after surgery is normal and easily managed with the prescribed eye drops.
4How long does cataract surgery take?
The surgery itself takes approximately 15 minutes per eye. Including preparation, numbing drops, and post-op observation, you'll spend about 2 hours at our clinic. Vision improvement begins within hours, with most patients seeing significantly better by the next morning. It is one of the fastest surgical procedures in medicine.
5What is the difference between monofocal, multifocal, and trifocal IOL lenses?
Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one distance (typically far) — you'll still need reading glasses (~40% glasses freedom). Multifocal IOLs correct two distances (far + near) — approximately 80% glasses freedom. Trifocal IOLs correct all three distances (far, intermediate/computer, and near) — approximately 95%+ glasses freedom for most daily activities. Toric versions of all three types are available to additionally correct astigmatism (+€400). Patients who don't yet have cataracts but want glasses freedom may also want to explore lens replacement surgery (RLE) as an alternative.
6Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?
It depends entirely on your IOL choice. With a monofocal IOL, you'll have excellent distance vision but will need reading glasses. With a trifocal IOL (our most popular option), approximately 95% of patients achieve complete glasses freedom for driving, computer work, phone use, and reading. Our surgeon at our clinic will recommend the ideal IOL based on your lifestyle, eye measurements, and visual goals during your free consultation.
7What IOL brands do you use?
We use only premium FDA/CE-approved IOL brands from the world's leading manufacturers at our JCI-accredited clinic: Alcon PanOptix (trifocal, our #1 choice), Alcon AcrySof (monofocal), Zeiss AT LISA tri (trifocal), Zeiss CT Asphina (monofocal), and Johnson & Johnson Tecnis Synergy (extended depth of focus). Toric variants are available for astigmatism correction. These are the exact same lens brands used in the best UK and US private clinics.
8Can cataracts come back after surgery?
No — cataracts cannot return once the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial IOL. However, in approximately 10–15% of patients, a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) can develop months or years later, causing slight clouding behind the IOL. This is easily and permanently treated with a painless 5-minute YAG laser procedure (often called a "laser polish") — no surgery required. Patients who also have elevated eye pressure concerns can explore our glaucoma treatment options.
9Can I have both eyes done at the same time?
We typically perform bilateral sequential surgery — one eye at a time, usually 1–2 days apart. This allows us to confirm the first eye's outcome, verify IOL power accuracy, and assess healing before proceeding with the second eye. Both eyes can often be completed within a single 4–5 day Istanbul trip. Alternatively, some patients prefer to return for the second eye 2–4 weeks later. Visit our clinic page for full details on how we coordinate your treatment schedule.
10How long do I need to stay in Istanbul for cataract surgery?
A minimum of 3 days for one eye: Day 1 for comprehensive pre-op diagnostics and biometry at our clinic, Day 2 for the surgery itself, and Day 3 for the post-op follow-up check — after which you're safe to fly home. For both eyes, we recommend a 4–5 day stay, allowing surgery on consecutive or alternate days with follow-ups for both. Compared to LASIK laser surgery which only requires 2–3 days, cataract surgery needs a slightly longer stay to monitor the IOL settling correctly.
11How soon can I fly after cataract surgery?
Most patients are safe to fly 2–3 days after surgery. Cabin pressure does not affect the IOL or the self-sealing micro-incision. We provide a complete aftercare pack for your journey home including eye drops, protective sunglasses, the plastic eye shield for sleeping, and written instructions. You'll have WhatsApp access to our team 24/7 during your trip and after you return. Full aftercare details are available on the cataract surgery page.
12Am I too old for cataract surgery?
There is no upper age limit for cataract surgery. It is routinely and safely performed on patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s at our clinic. Because it uses only topical anaesthetic (eye drops) with no general anaesthesia, it places minimal stress on the body. Your overall eye health matters more than your age — conditions like macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy are assessed individually. We welcome companions to travel with elderly patients and provide extra support throughout.
13What other eye surgery procedures do you offer in Istanbul?
Beyond cataract surgery, our Istanbul eye clinic covers the full spectrum of vision correction and eye health treatment — from laser surgery for younger patients to implantable lenses, lens replacement, and glaucoma care:

Not sure whether cataract surgery or lens replacement is the right option for you? Send us your existing eye report and we'll advise completely free.
